From shark-infested tropical seas to mammoths roaming across icy tundra, West Sussex has seen huge changes in the past 100 million years. These ancient environments of land and sea and the life that thrived through these times are recorded in the rocks and fossils that lie beneath the Chichester area. A quarry, a cliff, fossils found on the beach, even the shape of the landscape helps us to understand our local geology and fit the evidence together like a jigsaw puzzle.

David Bone, local geologist and popular speaker, has been studying West Sussex geology for many years and is the author of several local geology guides.
